Tres leches, meaning “three milks” in Spanish, is a Latin American sponge cake traditionally soaked in a mixture of three types of milk, commonly evaporated milk, condensed milk and whole milk or cream.

The result is a soft, moist and rich dessert that remains light despite being heavily soaked. The exact origins of tres leches are debated, with Mexico and Nicaragua among the countries most frequently associated with its development.

The dessert became widely popular across Latin America during the 20th century, helped in part by the growing availability of condensed and evaporated milk.

A related version known as trileće or trileçe has also become popular across the Balkans and Turkey.
